Tracking Frederick Law Olmsted

F. L. Olmsted swept like a storm through the world of architecture and planning in late-19th century America. Nearly single handedly, he invented the profession of landscape architecture as we know it, revolut ionized the design of parks and open spaces, and started a style of campus design quite unlike nearly everything that had proceeded it.

In this short project, you will examine the plan of a campus that Olmsted was involved in (see Turner pp. 146-158 in the packet). These are typically easy to find on the web, and sometimes historical information is available as well (although not required for this assignment). Compare what you know about Olmsted, either his actual plans for that ca mpus, or the style that he created, with what is actually found on the currrent campus map. Print the map.

What traces of his influence can you find? Highlight in some way the “Olmstedian” elements. If there are actual elements remaining from an Olmsted plan, highlight them differently. Write a short piece (half page or so) speculating on why there are or are not Olmstedian traces still visible in the campus plan.

Work with your study group, possibly even using the s ame campus, but hand in the assignments individually.

Due in class October 24, 2002.
