The space

A stairwell in the Lawrence Hall of the University of Oregon. The space has dramatic thermal properties:

• The glazing, comprising an estimated 3/4 of the walls, takes in a large amount of solar radiation.
• The glazing, being single, also conducts large amounts of heat in and out of the building.
• The massive concrete stair acts as a thermal mass.
• There is a radiator on the ground floor of the stairwell.
• The stairwell is isolated from the rest of the building by fire doors.
