On average, the length of a customer's visit to a bookstore in this
study falls within
a range of 6-10 minutes, with Bookstore #10 having the largest average
visit at
approximately 10 minutes.
Customers spend an average of about 4 and a half minutes in a section
before
moving on to another section. This average varies by no more than a
minute across
the four bookstores.

The average lengths of customers' visits to the two bookstores with
ambient and focal
light were 7 minutes and 10 minutes while the two bookstores with solely
ambient light
had averages of 8 minutes and 9 minutes. These graphs reveal no correlation
between
quality of light and customers' browsing times.

When we realized lighting was not a primary determinant of browsing
patterns in the four
bookstores studied, we analyzed the correspondence between browsing
time and the
bookstore's location. Bookstores in the downtown area had average browsing
lengths
of approximately 8 minutes and 10 minutes. Bookstores in outlying areas
further from
downtown browsing averages at 7 minutes and 9 minutes.
This graph reveals the popularity of the magazine section in Bookstore
#2, which
was the only bookstore that sold magazines. Customers spent an average
of 7
minutes browsing in the magazine section versus an average of 3 minutes
spent
browsing in other sections of the store.
This graph illustrates the amount of time customers spent browsing
in the magazine
section of Bookstore #2. Customers spent an average of 8 minutes browsing
throughout the entire store, including the magazine section. When the
time
customers spent browsing in the magazine section is eliminated from
the caluclation,
this average drops to 4 minutes which reveals that the browsing in
Bookstore #2's
non-magazine sections is actually less than the browsing averages in
equivalent
sections in the other three stores.
