The repair focused on a "dormant" scaleāa heavy-duty warehouse scale where the mechanism is recessed into a pit to keep the platform flush with the surrounding floor. The initial state of the scale is documented in the reference photos below.

Setup & Disassembly: Work began with staging tools and removing the heavy plywood platform. Due to the high-moisture environment, a corner mounting screw sheared during extraction. Initial attempts to slot the screw for removal were unsuccessful, requiring a more intensive drilling and retapping procedure.

Cleaning & Alignment: Decades of debris and oxidation were vacuumed from the pit. In a mechanical scale, cleanliness is paramount for accuracy. The primary failure was identified as a "knife-edge" pivot that had slipped out of its V-groove bearing (saddle), causing the mechanism to bind.

Final Reassembly: The pivots were cleaned, lubricated, and reseated. The platform was precisely aligned to maintain a proper "floor gap," preventing friction against the surrounding wooden floor. The counterpoise "Tare" cup was inspected and remains configured for differential measurements as requested.

The scale is currently operational for differential weighing. However, given the significant corrosion noted on the internal levers, we recommend considering a transition to a modern digital system. A digital upgrade would provide higher precision and lower maintenance requirements in the LN2 environment.
Enlarging the wooden floor opening and fabricating custom standoffs to set the new digital scale flush with the deck is estimated to require 6 hours of labor.
