Window orientation is a major issue
Windows facing north or south are easily protected
from sun while admitting plentiful daylight.
North-facing windows need overhangs;
South-facing windows need thin vertical fins at each side.
Windows facing east or west need protection from the rising or setting sun; often, adjustable vertical fins are used. Sun at such low altitude brings a threat of severe glare, as well as overheating.
