The costs of the new arena had grown to the range of $180 million to $190 million. In a study conducted for the University in 2003 by CSL International, initial estimates showed a range of $90 million to $130 million.
In mid-December, the projected cost had been raised to $160 million. As of January, projected costs had increased another $20 million.
"All told, we would've needed $130 million (from donors), and a lot of people would think that that could build a very nice arena," Athletics Director Bill Moos said. "Indeed it has on some campuses. To get where we wanted to be and everything we wanted to include in this, the price tag got lofty."
RelocationSeven sites were chosen as finalists and possibilities for the new arena. The University's hope was to build on the site where the current Williams' Bakery is located. The cost of the land became too great, and attention turned to the Howe Field site. As of late 2004, it appeared the University would buy the Williams site. Officials said it could be used for a new arena or other campus buildings.
Other sites included building next to Autzen Stadium and the location of the new courthouse site next to the Ferry Street Bridge. Some sites in Springfield were also considered.
The University has acknowledged the possibility of relocating the site because of financial constraints when the plans are re-evaluated.
