A range of reactions from students who are far from their homes

As an important part of this community, international students serve as a bridge of communication between the United States and the rest of the world. How do they make sense of the Sept. 11 tragedy and its aftermath? In this section, seven international students tell their stories about what they experienced, whether their lives have been affected, and how they feel about the U.S. response.




Ibrahim Kang
A Chinese scholar looks at said it was necessary to fight terrorism, yet it is wrong to connect terrorism to Islam. He said he hoped that the United States willsupport a democratic government in Afghanistan





Retno Suprihatin
A graduate student who was in Wisconsin on Sept. 11 said she was concerned for the safety of Muslims in the United States but that when she returned to Eugene, she found a supportive community.





Khalid
A graduate student from Yemen said that it is dangerous to jump to a quick solution without getting rid of the root of international terrorism and that anti-terrorism efforts require international cooperation.
