Inventory
Scanning
After the
spreadsheet inventory is prepared, we created a PDF of the slide labels and
thumbnails of the images for reference purposes. This is done by scanning the
slides twice on the Epson 10000 flatbed scanner, 20 slides at a time to
facilitate printing. The scans are made through Silverfast/Photoshop,
and then combined using Adobe Acrobat. There is preset in Silverfast
exclusively for use when doing Inventory Scanning. Place all personal slides at
the end of the scanning queue.
1. Log into either the PC or one of the
Macs using the vrc-student account and password
2. Turn on the scanner
3. Remove the Transparency Blind from the
scanner
4. Place the Transparency Guide on the bed
of the scanner
5. Arrange slides IN ORDER on the platen,
label side down in a group of 20 according to the page guides on the edge of
the platen. Close the lid
6. Open Photoshop. Open Silverfast (File > Import > Silverfast
or Ctrl/Apple+G)
7. Frame tab > Settings > Inventory
scanning
8. General tab > Original >
Transparency
9. Click the Prescan
button
10. Adjust marquee around slide group
11. Click zoom button
12. Adjust histogram until you get decent
thumbnails of all images
13. Click the Scan button
14. In Photoshop, rotate the image if
necessary so it can easily be printed out full page
15. Image > Adjust > Replace Color
16. Choose black to replace if not already
selected. Move Lightness slider to the right, 80-100% to eliminate black
borders. Be careful not to remove too much of the image data!
17. File > Save As… and name files
using the class number, date and image batch: ArH204061003image1.jpg. Save as jpeg with 12 (maximum)
quality in the Art History Classes > [Class folder] > [Dated folder] on
the Hard Drive. Be sure to keep all files for a class together!
