l. Montacute House, Somerset. Screen in the Hall (stone). Note strapwork above the entablature and the adoption of something that looks more or less like a classical order of architecture.

2. Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire (1576-1597) by Robert Smythson for Elizabeth Shrewsbury. The High Great Chamber in evening sunlight. The great painted pargework frieze is the masterpiece of Abraham Smith. 3. Hardwick Hall. The Gallery which runs the whole length of the east front. This immense room is hung with tapestries acquired by Bess of Hardwick in Brussels shortly before the house was built, and the Gallery was designed to fit them.

4. Walnut and oak cupboard with marquetry of ebony, cedar, and holly. Circa 1585.

5. Nonesuch chest made in England about 1600. The architectural front is divided into panels which are vigorously inlaid. National Trust, Montacute House.

6. Draw table with bulb support of 'cup and cover' form; frieze decorated with guilloche border.
