Jewel cabinet of Madame de Maintenon. A rich inlay of birds and flowers in pietra dura decorate the drawer panels. Note the architectural character of the piece and the specifically French inclusion of an attic story.



Carved and gilded wooden armchair covered in silk damask. ca. 1680; designed in the court style of Jean Lepautre. Note that damask fabric shows the same pattern on the back as on the front except that the values (lightness and darkness configuration) are reversed.
