萩原英雄　もみぢ Hagiwara Hideo (1913-2007) Autumn Color 1959 Color woodblock print on paper, printed on both sides  Gift of John Henry Rock, 89.23.4 Inspired by the penetration of ink from the front of the paper to the back in traditional ukiyo-e prints, Hagiwara reversed the process. He saturated the back of the sheet with dark ink, rubbed it through to the front with a coil-like baren, and then printed the image on top of the penetrating ink layer, resulting in a composition with great depth of color. The circular motion of the baren on the back of the paper produced the swirling pattern in the black areas.
