井田照一 Ida Shōichi (1941–2006) Paper Between a Snowed Stone and Water Stain,  from the series Surface is the Between: Between Vertical and Horizon 1981 Silkscreen and lithograph, printed on both sides Museum Purchase: Caroline Ladd Pratt Fund, 83.58.1 The title “Between Vertical and Horizon” is both a description of the artist’s working process—he printed horizontally to produce a vertical print—and a comment on his exploration of the role of the artist as intermediary between the force of gravity and the paper during the printmaking process. In Ida’s words, “I am not interested in imposing my ego on every material and technique, on every situation. I always want to create something new between nature and myself.”
