About This Print

A view of a very gentle Mount Asama, an active volcano, from the southeast.  Beyond the town, the remnants of an old lava flow are depicted. This print is one of twelve prints from the series Here and There in Joshin'etsu.

Mt. Asama

Mt. Asama (2,568 meters) is a triple-fold volcano bordering on Nagano and Gunma prefectures. It erupted constantly from the geological age until 1281 when the current form of the mountain emerged after a large eruption. It has been growing at a faster rate since a massive eruption occurred in 1782. The absence of more imposing peaks in the surrounding area permits the entire mountain to be seen unencumbered while discharged smoke rises from the summit to be carried off into the clear sky. The north side of the base of the volcano features the Onioshidashi Lava Flow, considered one of the world's three finest spots of [volcanic] scenic beauty and is home to the Asama Ranch, where an extensive grassland area is located.

Mount Asama erupted in early February 2009, sending ash to a height of 2 km (6,600 ft), and throwing rocks up to 1 km (5⁄8 mi) from the crater. Ash fall was reported in Tokyo, 145 km (90 mi) southeast of the volcano crater. On 16 February there were 13 recorded volcanic earthquakes and an eruption emitting smoke and ash in a cloud 400 m (1,300 ft) high. Mount Asama continued to have small eruptions, tremors and earthquakes in February and remained on level-3 alert (with a danger zone within 4 km (2 1⁄2 mi) of the crater).
