About This Print

In this scene from chapter 50, A Pavilion, (Azumaya), Prince Niao visits Ukifune, the governor's stepdaughter. The open sliding door suggests an anticipated romantic encounter.

Source: The Tale of Genji, Lady Murasaki, Dead Authors Society, 2018
Wandering restlessly here and there, Niou came upon a girl [Ukifune] whom he had not seen before, out towards the west veranda.... He opened the door yet a little more and peered from behind the screen.... Never the one to hold back on such occasions, he clutched at her skirt.... He stretched out familiarly beside her.

Ukon [in service to Ukifune] groped her way through the darkness, and came upon a fragrantly reclining figure in a man's singlet. So he was at it again! She knew immediately that he did not have Ukifune's permission.... He was always being attracted to new women who had far less to recommend them.
