About This Print

In this scene from chapter 8, Hana-no-En, it is spring in Genji’s twentieth year and he has met Oborotsukyo, a Lady of Chamber, in the corridor of Kokiden Hall.

Source:  Genji gojūshijō 源氏五十四帖, published by Shin Kōbe Shinbunsha, 1974.
Genji is a little drunk on the wine served at the cherry-viewing banquet and wanders off into the corridors of Kokiden Hall. Suddenly, a young, beautiful voice recites an ancient poem – “There is nothing like a faint moonlit night.” Prince Genji seizes her sleeve, leads her towards a room and quietly shuts the door.
