About This Print

In this scene from chapter 33, Fuji-uraba (Leaves of Wisteria), set in Prince Genji's 39th year, Yūgiri and Kumoi-no-kari are embracing with tears of joy at being allowed to marry.

Source:  Genji gojūshijō 源氏五十四帖, published by Shin Kōbe Shinbunsha, 1974.
With the approach of Akashino-Himegimi's entry into the Court, Yūgiri was kept busy in preparing for the event. Nevertheless, he could hardly control himself in his mad desire for Kumoi-no-kari. For her part, Kumoi-no-kari was almost blind with her love toward him. The bond of affection between the two seemed unbreakable.

Around the first of April, the wisteria flowers were out in the garden of the Lord Keeper. He held a flower-viewing party. Receiving an invitation, Yūgiri was pleased to be present. When the banquet reached its height, the Lord Keeper gave Yūgiri a willing permission to marry his daughter. That night, led by his cousin Kashiwagi, Yūgiri visited Kumoi-no-kari at her room. The love affair of some years standing thus came to a successful fruition.
