In this scene from chapter 18, Matsukaze, it is Genji’s thirty-first year and he holds in his armsAkashi-no-hime-Gimi his daughter with Akashi-no-Uye, who looks on. Akashi-no-Uye has moved to her inherited villa west of Kyoto by the River Ōi.

Genji has renewed his old love for Akashi-no-Uye and one night tells Murasaki-no-Uye about his affair with Akashi-no-Uye and wanting to bring up his daughter in the palace. Having no daughter of her own, Murasaki-no-Uye agrees despite her slight jealousy of Akashi.
