About This Print
In this scene from chapter 12, Suma, Prince Genji, now 26 years old, has exiled himself to Suma after an ill-advised tryst with Lady Ohborotsukiyo.
Source: Genji gojūshijō 源氏五十四帖, published by Shin Kōbe Shinbunsha, 1974.
Soon the moon rose bright. He recollected wistfully, imagining this or that friend might be looking at this same moon, he at last fancied to see them vividly before his eyes and finally this feeling growing unbearable to him, he burst into tears.
The hermit-like life at Suma continued till March of the next year.
