About This Print
In this scene from chapter 38, Suzumushi, Prince Genji and his wife, Onna-Sanno-Miya are listening to the sounds of autumn insects.
Source: Genji gojūshijō 源氏五十四帖, published by Shin Kōbe Shinbunsha, 1974.
It is Genji’s 50th year. Prayer beads can be seen as Genji visits Onna-Sanno-Miya sitting before an altar in her room. In the garden, autumn insects such as “suzumushi” and “matsu-mushi” were at the top of their silvery voices. Genji’s presence has made her forget the prayers she was to offer.
