About This Print

In this scene from chapter 22, Tamakatsura, Tamakatsura with her wet-nurse, her son and youngest daughter leave for Kyoto to escape the attentions of Taifu-no-Gen.

Source:  Genji gojūshijō 源氏五十四帖, published by Shin Kōbe Shinbunsha, 1974.
Living in a rural province of Kyushu Island, Tamakatsura grew into a great beauty. One day, Taifu-no-Gen, a samurai of Higo Province, proposed to her, but not wishing to accept, it was decided she should flee to the capital, Kyoto.

In the capital Tamakatsura's has a joyous reunion with her former maid servant Ukon and will be invited to live in Genji's home.
