About This Print

In this scene from chapter 43, The Red Plums, it is the spring of Kaoru-no-Kimi’s 24th year. Azechi-no-Dainagon admires the red plum blossoms while listening to koto music played by his wife, Makibashira.

Source:  Genji gojūshijō 源氏五十四帖, published by Shin Kōbe Shinbunsha, 1974.
One day when the red plum blossoms were beautifully out in his garden, Dainagon made a present of a flower-laden twig to Niou-Hyōbukyō-no-Miya to whom he wanted to marry his second daughter. However, no favorable replay was received.
