This small print, one of five in a portfolio titled Scenic Views of Sapporo, Hand-printed Woodblock Collection, Volume 1, pictures sheep grazing on the Yama-no-ie Hut tucked below Mt. Okuteine on the outskirts of Sapporo City. The five prints in this portfolio feature scenic views on or near the campus of Hokkaido University, the former Hokkaido Imperial University.

The Yama-no-ie Hut (literally ‘mountain house hut’) is officially managed by the Hokkaido University Wandervogel Club. Staff and students of Hokkaido University can use the hut for free, whereas the general public pay 80 yen a night (around $0.80 a night).
Administered by the former Japanese National Railways until 1970, Okuteineyama House was transferred to the University in April 1971 and is the largest of its five mountain huts. Long a popular base for ski touring, it is particularly suited to winter use. The winter route over Zenibako Pass has a tough reputation, however, so be sure to go with experienced companions.
