About This Print
Western tourists arriving in Kobe. The pier would have been lined with rickshaw drivers awaiting fairs. In commenting on this print Osaka Prints1 notes, "This design is one of a handful that, in 19512, Hide carved but then allowed the Tokyo-based Katō Hanga Kenkyusho (a publishing firm founded 1930 by Katō Junji specializing in contemporary artists) to print and publish for him. The image of foreigners arriving at Kobe port and hiring rickshaws is a very different re-working in a far larger and vertical format of a similar theme among his smaller mid-1930s "100 Views of Kobe" scenes [see image below]. Although one might be tempted to read some 'spoiled rich Westerners' social commentary into the scene, Kawanishi is known to have pitied the tourists for how badly the rickshaw men cheated them!"
