The Mikasa Hotel was built in 1905, the middle of the Meiji era when Western-styled architecture was just starting to enter Japan. It was completely designed an An important national cultural property, this pure Western-style hotel constructed of wood was built by a Japanese architect. The unique exterior is a fusion of American, British and German architectural styles.
At the time of its operation (1906-1970), it boasted some of the finest innovations of the time including electric chandeliers and tiled flush toilets. It was frequented by many prominent figures and acted as a symbol of Westernization during the Meiji period. Designated as a national cultural heritage site in 1980, the hotel now operates as a museum open to the public.
