About This Print
From the printed title below the image we know this is a view of Jinzhou1 Castle after it was occupied by the Japanese. As Jinzhou was fought over and then occupied by the Japanese in both the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895) and the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) this scene could have been from either war. However, given the artist's 1874 birth date, it is more likely a scene from the Russo-Japanese War. Jinzhou was taken by the Japanese from the Russians on May 26, 1904. I can find no information on the artist having been to the front in either of these wars.It is difficult to tell whether this print is a woodblock or a lithograph. The artist worked in both mediums.
1 Jinzhou is also seen written as Chinchow, or Kinchow and, in Japanese, Kinchū.
