About This Print
Rokkaku-dō, the eighteenth temple on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage, is officially known as Chōhō-ji. When Nakazawa along with his two friends, the poet Ishikura Suiyō and the artist Akatsuka Chūichi, visited in December 1923 or early 1924 while on their pilgrimage to the thirty-three temples that comprise the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage, Rokkaku-dō, now in central Kyoto, would have been more on the city's periphery, witness the below then and now photo. For more information on their pilgrimage see the article Nakazawa Hiromitsu - Picture Album of the Thirty-Three Pilgrimage Places of the Western Provinces.
Legend has it that Rokkaku-dō (official name Chōhō-ji) was founded by Prince Shōtoku in 587 when he stopped at a small pond to bathe. Placing an amulet of Nyoirin Kannon he was carrying down while bathing, he found the amulet to heavy to pick up after his bath. That night Nyoirin Kannon appeared to the prince in a dream and told him to build a six-sided temple to enshrine him. The name Rokkaku (literally "six angles") refers to the hexagonal shape of the hondō, or main hall.
Rokkaku-dō is known as the birth place of ikebana. In the 15th century, the 12th abbot of the temple, Sankei Ikenobo, created a method of flower arrangement that came to be known as ikebana in the monks' residence near the temple pond or ike-no-bo. The flowers were originally an offering to an image of Kannon, the goddess of mercy.
The priest's style of floral arrangement to the goddess was carried on by a family who lived behind the temple and thus ikebana was born. The modern school of flower arrangement has its headquarters here to this day in the tall, modern building north-west of the temple on Karasuma Dori.
The temple buildings you see today at Rokkakudō date from 1876.

The Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage (Saigoku sanjūsansho junrei)
Japan's most famous pilgrimage, originating in the 11th century, encompasses 33 Buddhist temples in Western Japan (Kansai region) dedicated to Kannon (bodhisattva Avalokitasvara), the Bodhisattva of Compassion, who hears the cries of the world and assists anyone in distress.
The 33 temples on the approximately 1,000 kilometer pilgrimage route correspond to Kannon's ability to take on 33 different forms. One hundred thousand pilgrims navigate the route in its entirety or part each year.
Note: For a listing of all 33 temples go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saigoku_Kannon_Pilgrimage. To access an interactive map of the route and its temples go to https://www.thetempleguy.org/p/saigoku-33-kannon-route.html and scroll down towards the bottom of the page.
