About This Print
Nakazawa shows us two pilgrims about to pass a priest along the old Pilgrim Path connecting Katsuō-ji, the twenty-third temple along the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage, to the twenty-second temple, Sōji-ji.On December 1923, only a few months after the Great Kantō Earthquake devastated the Tokyo area, Nakazawa along with his two friends, the poet Ishikura Suiyō and the artist Akatsuka Chūichi, began their pilgrimage to the thirty-three temples comprising the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage, taking seventy-eight days to complete the route.

Katsuō-ji, located in the mountains of Minoh City, in the northern suburb of Osaka, is twenty-third temple on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage.

Katsuo-ji Temple was built in the year 727 (The end of the Nara period), and worshipped as a winning temple since 1300 years ago. In the beginning, the 6th chief priest of Katsuo-ji Temple cured Emperor Seiwa's illness by praying.
From this episode, our temple was named 勝王寺 Katsuou-ji (勝 Katsu means win, 王 Ou means King), but it was too presumptuous to have that name, so the name's lettering turned to 勝尾寺 Katsuo-ji, a more modest name.
From that time on, many Shogun and Busho prayed at Katsuo-ji as anyone who prayed here could beat any challenges in life from the Kamakura period to the Edo period. Katsuo-ji is also called the Winning Daruma Doll Temple. A lot of darumas are dedicated for people who pray for school success, fulfillment in love, and victory in sports games, etc. But the most important thing is your effort.
Daruma fortune dolls are available as well. Every fortune doll has a different face, so you can pick one which you feel a "relationship" to. Temple-goers often place the Daruma fortune dolls in their homes. In magnificence, you can feel its strong power.
The Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage (Saigoku sanjūsansho junrei)
Japan's most famous pilgrimage, originating in the 11th century, encompasses 33 Buddhist temples in Western Japan (Kansai region) dedicated to Kannon (bodhisattva Avalokitasvara), the Bodhisattva of Compassion, who hears the cries of the world and assists anyone in distress.
The 33 temples on the approximately 1,000 kilometer pilgrimage route correspond to Kannon's ability to take on 33 different forms. One hundred thousand pilgrims navigate the route in its entirety or part each year.

First issued in 1925 and reprinted in 1946, the 1925 album contains 58 prints and the 1946 album 59 prints.
