About This Print
Nan'endō, located at the southwest edge of Nara Park, is the ninth temple along the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. Nakazawa shows us couples strolling along Sarusawa Pond while the famous Nara Park deer tend to their business. In the background we see the octagonal Nan'endō Hall on the right and the pagoda, left-center, is likely the three-story Sanjū-no-tō. Nan'endō is within the Kōfuku-ji 興福寺 complex.
Along with his two traveling companions, the poet Ishikura Suiyō and the artist Akatsuka Chūichi, Nakazawa undertook this 600 mile pilgrimage in December 1923, only three months after the Great Kantō Earthquake devastated the Tokyo area.

First built in 813, Nan'endō (Southern Round Hall) is located on the edge of Nara Park in Nara Prefecture and is the 9th temple on the Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage route. The hall was build as a memorial by the Northern Fujiwara clan, which founded Kōfuku-ji as a family temple and as a center for the Hossō Buddhist sect in 710.
 Fukūkenjaku Kannon by Kōkei, 1189 wood and gold leaf over lacquer. | "Nan’endō’s principal Kannon image is Fukūkenjaku Kannon (sometimes known as Fukūkensaku), which means 'Kannon who holds the rope and snare.' She has three eyes and eight arms, and the beast-catching net and fish-catching line in her hands symbolize Kannon’s ability to catch up all beings in order to save them, and the promise that prayers will be answered. This noose-and-net-bearing Kannon is also associated with helping people who are harassed by their more ‘animal’ passions, like anger, gluttony, addiction, and lust; though this Kannon’s principal renown is for keeping the family safe and ensuring the health and long life of one’s descendants." |
The Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage (Saigoku sanjūsansho junrei)
Japan's most famous pilgrimage, originating in the 11th century, encompasses 33 Buddhist temples in Western Japan (Kansai region) dedicated to Kannon (bodhisattva Avalokitasvara), the Bodhisattva of Compassion, who hears the cries of the world and assists anyone in distress.
The 33 temples on the approximately 1,000 kilometer pilgrimage route correspond to Kannon's ability to take on 33 different forms. One hundred thousand pilgrims navigate the route in its entirety or part each year.

First issued in 1925 and reprinted in 1946, the 1925 album contains 58 prints and the 1946 album 59 prints.
