About This Print

Sekino focuses on the stone foundation of one of the remaining buildings of the castle town. The main 5 story castle building and other wood construction were torn down in 1874 and only foundations and a few smaller buildings remain.

Hagi and Hagi Castle
The coastal city of Hagi on the Sea of Japan flourished as a castle town after Mori Terumoto (1553-1625) built Hagi Castle in 1604 at the base of Mt. Shizuki (and a smaller fortification on the mountain's top) and is one of the most historic cities in Japan. The impressive samurai and merchant residences lining its narrow streets, the summer oranges peeking out of earthen walls, and the namako patterned walls, harken back to the characteristic streets of the Edo period. In 2015 the town was registered as a World Heritage Site.
