About This Print and Nō Sugata

From volume three of a twenty volume album titled Nō Sugata consisting of text, photographs, illustrations and color woodblock prints published by Unsōdō Publishing over the period 1931-1934.  The woodblock prints were created by Matsuno Sōfū (1899-1963), the photographs by Genzō Kitazumi (1898-1982), the album's text was written by Kanze Sakon (1895-1939), the 24th head (sōke) of the Kanze School and Nō actor, and the preface was written by Sasakawa Rinfu (active 1920s-1930s).

A priest from the shrine in Muro in Harima province makes a pilgrimage to the sister shrine of Kamo Myōjin and there sees a white-feathered arrow set up beside the river.  He learns from a woman who, with a companion, comes there to draw water, that when long ago a woman of the Hata family picked up such an arrow floating in the river and carried it home, she miraculously conceived and gave birth to a son.  The child was the god Wake-ikazuchi and he, his mother and the arrow are now revered as the three gods of the Kamo Shrine.  Telling the priest that she is one of these gods, the woman disappears with her companion.  Later the goddess and her son Wake-ikazuchi come forth to dance and promise to protect the land and its people.
