A Court official announces that he has been ordered to send Nakakuni to find the Lady Kogō, the favorite of the Emperor Takakura, who has disappeared from Kyōto for fear that, since the Empress is the daughter of Taira no Kiyomori, she would incur his displeasure if she remained in the capital.  As there has been word that Kogō is living near Sagano, Nakakuni goes there and is eventually led to the lady by the sound of a Japanese harp being played.  He gives Kogō a letter from the Emperor and, after recieving her reply, prepares to return.  But pitying Kogō in her unhappiness, he drinks some wine with her and dances in an attempt to console her.  He then takes leave of the lady and sets off back to the capital.
