The Play - Zegai

Source: A Guide to No, P.G. O'Neill, Hinoki Shoten, 1929, p. 236.

Having had great success in winning adherents in his own country of China, the goblin king Zegai-bō comes to Japan in the guise of a priest and calls on Tarō-bō to guide him.  He advises him to direct his attention to Mt. Hiei where Buddhism is most strongly rooted, and this he does.  The head priest and his attendants are on their way to the Court when heaven and earth shake, and the voice of Zegai-bō is heard uttering heretical cries.  He appears and pits his powers against that of the priests, but finding that he is no match for them, he flees after being made to swear that he will never trouble Japan again.
