Shigehara, brought to Kamakura after his capture at the battle of Ichi-no-tani, has been given into the charge of Kano-no-suke Munemochi until his fate is decided.  To lighten the tedium of his captivity, Senju-no mae has been sent to comfort him.  When she comes on this occasion it is to tell him that even his request to be allowed to enter the priesthood has been refused.  Shigehira tells of his regret at having burned the Nara temples, but Senju-no-mae entertains him with song and dance, and Shigehira himself plays a piece on his lute.  Dawn comes all too soon, however, and Shigehira is taken away to face his punishment in the capital.
