About This Print
One of 120 prints issued as part of the series Nōgaku hyakuban (One Hundred Prints of Noh), it depicts a scene inside of a shrine from the play Ikarikazuki attributed to Komparu Zenpō 金春禅鳳 (1454-?). This print was originally released by the publisher Matsuki Heikichi in the ninth installment of prints in this series. This series' prints were offered in monthly installments consisting of three prints packaged in an envelope with additional descriptive information.1The Play - Ikarikazuki (The Anchor Draping)

A traveling priest comes to Dan-no-ura where the Taira clan were defeated in a famous sea battle with the Minamoto, and meets an old boatman who tells him of the exploits performed during the battle by Nortsune, the younger brother of Tomomori. In the second act Tomomori himself appears and describes how, when faced with defeat, Dainagon no Tsubone and Nii-dono drowned themselves, taking with them the young Emperor Antoku, and how Tomomori too threw himself into the sea, holding an anchor to weigh him down.
