About This Print

A view of Edo Bay at Takanawa with wild geese flying under an autumn moon.  Takanawa at Shiba bordered Edo and the evening travelers going about their business would have to pass through a checkpoint at the town gate (machikido) into Edo. The town gate would close at about 10 PM and re-open at daybreak.

About the Series Forty-Eight Famous Views of Edo
As with many of Hiroshige II's prints, the prints comprising the series Forty-Eight Famous Views of Edo borrowed from his teacher Utagawa Hiroshige I, as can be seen below.  Hiroshige II used elements from the designs of both the below Hiroshige I prints, placing them in a vertical format.

Evening View of Takenawa (Takenawa no yūkie)
from the series Famous Places in the Eastern Capital (Tōto meisho), 1832-1838
Utagawa Hiroshige I
