About This Print

Source:Information on this station taken from the wikipedia article "53 Stations of the Tōkaidō."
Print number 45 in this series of 581 prints titled Fifty-three Stations of the Tôkaidô Road issued in October 1865, depicting Shōno the forty-fifth station along the Tōkaidō. It is located in the present-day city of Suzuka, Mie Prefecture, Japan.  It was the smallest station on the Tōkaidō.

In this view, Hiroshige II has chosen not to set the seen at night in driving rain, as did his master Hiroshige I.  Perhaps the publisher thought the cost of carving and printing such a complex scene would be prohibitive.
