About This Print

At the top of this "news nishiki-e" is a banner held aloft by two cherubs containing the name of the sponsoring newspaper, the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shinbun 東京日々新聞.  In this print, Japanese celebrate detente with China over the killings of Ryukyuan fishermen who shipwrecked on Taiwan.1

This nishiki-e was published to celebrate the agreement signed between the governments of Japan and the Qing Dynasty of China concerning Taiwan, which a Japanese expeditionary force had partly occupied in order to punish some Taiwanese who had killed a number of shipwrecked Okinawans. The picture shows the Japanese flag raised, geisha dancing, and men toasting the end of what some Taiwanese and Chinese call the First Sino-Japanese War.2

For a summary of the brief life of nishiki-e shinbun (newspaper color woodblock prints) see the article Nishiki-e shinbun and Newspapers in Meiji Japan.
