II. Goals: German 312 is a third-year language course that builds
on Ger 311. The majority of the readings will focus on Germany as a multicultural
society. You will explore the question: Who or what is German today? You
will find out how Germans see themselves and others and how others perceive
the Germans and their country. You will discuss topics such as national
identity, foreigners in Germany, cultural trends in contemporary Germany,
etc. You will also improve your language abilities by reviewing and refining
grammar concepts, broadening your vocabulary, and practicing your writing,
listening, and speaking skills.
III. Quizzes: There will be a total of five quizzes, which will
primarily test vocabulary and grammar concepts covered in class. Individual
Quiz topics can be found at the above URL under "Quizzes."
IV. Homework: You are expected to come to class prepared. This
means you must have completed the writing and reading assignments on the
course calendar before coming to class. No late homework will be
accepted unless you have obtained my permission in case of an emergency.
V. Writing Assignments (Aufsätze): Writing assignments must
be handed in on the dates indicated on the course calendar. The assignments
must consist of at least 200 words and should not exceed 250 words. They
must be typed and double spaced. Topics will be based on our class discussions
and can be found online at the URL above. Your grade will be based on argumentation,
grammatical accuracy, syntax, and orthography. You will be given the opportunity
to rewrite your all essays (with the exception of the last one) to improve
your grade. The rewrites are for rewriting purposes only ó if you
did not turn in the first draft when it was due, you may not turn it in
as a rewrite.
VI. Tests: There will be two tests which will take the entire
class period. They will contain questions on both the grammar and the readings
covered in class. You will be allowed a dictionary during the test. If
you fail to show up for any exam at the appointed time without having obtained
my permission in advance. Emergencies that can be substantiated will be
treated as exceptions.
VII. Participation: Practicing your oral skills is essential
for improving your language abilities. Class participation is therefore
mandatory. For each class period you will receive a grade for active participation.
You are allowed 1 absence, beginning with the second absence your participation
grade will drop 10 percentage points with each additional absence.
VIII. Grading
