Historical
Eugene has a long history of great live music venues.
Even the funkiest dives had their own appeal, part of which
might have been that they wanted my band to play there.
I miss these places, whose owners took chances to host live
music and poured sweat and money into the venues, even if
sometimes the bands came up short.
- Black Forest
- From loud, rowdy rock and roll, to solo singer-songwriters,
the Black Forest was a place to hear live and often local music
for years.
- Downtown Lounge
- A bar and lounge with a stage and a smooth dance floor,
the Downtown Lounge hosted a wide assortment of music.
- The Granary Pizza
- After Jo Fed's closed, there came The Granary, in the same place,
and often hosting similar types of music. I loved going there,
I loved playing there, and I loved their pizza.
- Jo Federigo's
- Jo Fed's was the home of hip music in Eugene, often jazz.
It is sorely missed.
- John Henry's
- John Henry's presented a wide array of music for ages.
I think I saw Indigo Swing there, or was it Stompy Jones?
My band played there, as well.
- Luna
- Attached to the swanky Adam's Place restaurant, Luna was a lovely
space with an eclectic array of great live music shows booked and
sometimes performed by local great Erik Muiderman.
- The Place
- Before I arrived here, but I've heard legends.
- Taboo
- Some surprisingly good live music here. Was it here
that I saw Robben Ford? (Really, he played in Eugene c.2008).
- Taylor's
- Taylor's once famously hosted live music.
- Wild Duck Music Hall
- Before there was a Wild Duck Pub east of campus, there was
a Wild Duck Music Hall in west downtown. It hosted a
wide variety of live music. I heard and danced to ska,
swing, and salsa bands there, and took my first Argentine tango
classes.
