In May 1974, Dr. Moursund published the first issue of the Oregon Computing Teacher, a periodical targeted at computer-using educators, especially at the K-12 levels and in teacher education. The name of this periodical was changed to The Computing Teacher in 1979 when Dr. Moursund founded the International Council for Computers in Education (ICCE). He served as the Chief Executive Officer of ICCE from 1979 until 1989. ICCE became the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) in 1989 when it merged with the International Association for Computing in Education. Dr. Moursund was the Executive Officer of ISTE from 1989 to 1998. He then served as ISTE's Executive Officer for Research and Evaluation until the end of March 2001.
The title of The Computing Teacher was changed to Learning and Leading with Technology, effective with the May 1995 issue. Dr. Moursund served as the Editor-in-Chief for this periodical until the end of March 2001. During his tenure as Editor-in-Chief of this periodical and its predecessors he wrote approximately 200 editorials. For the most part, these were "think pieces" designed to help provide leadership in the emerging field of IT in K-12 education and teacher education.
Dr. David Moursund received his doctorate in mathematics (specializing in numerical analysis) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in January 1963. He has been teaching and writing in the field of information technology in education since then. He was an Instructor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison January-June, 1963. He taught in a Computer Summer Institute for high school students in the summer of 1963. He was an Assistant Professor and then an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and in the Computing Center (Engineering) at Michigan State University, 1963-1967. He was an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and the Computing Center at the University of Oregon, 1967-1969. He was the first chairman of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oregon from 1969 to 1975. He is now a professor in the College of Education at the University of Oregon. Dr. Moursund has authored or co-authored more than 30 books and numerous articles on information technology in education. He has been the major professor and/or served on the dissertation committees of more than 75 doctoral students in the field of computers in education.
