Instructions for Summary for REL407/507 Narrative Selves

Select one of the readings from the course packet that is an article or excerpt from a larger volume, and do a one- to two-page summary of a larger selection from the original work, of approximately two articles or chapters. Submit the summary via email as a Microsoft Word attachment, or as a plain text document, with paragraphs separated by a line rather than an indent. (All other written assignments to be submitted in hard copy, not email attachments.) Summaries are due on the Friday before class meets to do the reading from the volume you have decided to summarize. I will post the summaries to the course web site so others can read them. You may summarize the same reading that you are also presenting on, if you like, but the handout for the presentation and the summary are different assignments.

LENGTH: 1-2 pages

FORMAT: Microsoft Word file or plain text file sent as email attachment. Paragraphs separated by empty line, not indent.

DUE DATE: Friday before we read the article/excerpt from the volume you are selecting to summarize from. If you choose an article/excerpt we have already read before week 3, then the due date is Friday, January 19, 5 p.m.

Most of the original volumes are ON RESERVE as of January 13, 2007.

There are two selections not available in the library:

Mark Unno, edited, Buddhism and Psychotherapy Across Cultures (Boston: Wisdom Publications, 2006).

Paul Brockelman, Time and Self: Phenomenological Explorations (Atlanta, GA: Scholars Press, 1985).

If you would like to summarize selections from one of these works, please see me.
