World Literature

From the Renaissance to the Rise of Romanticism: 1500-1800

English 108 is the second term of a three-term chronological survey from the earliest to the most recent literature. For Winter 2000, the emphasis is on the development of satire and social criticism in western literature and, by way of comparison, Japanese philosophy and culture in Basho's prose and haiku poetry.

The Tempest -- Ferdinand and Miranda meet. From a painting by Wm. Hamilton, R.A., engraving for a 19th century edition of Shakespeare.  Oroonoko -- Oroonoko's wife Imoinda prepares to die by his hand rather than be recaptured. Plate from the 1735 edition.
