IHS Summer Research Workshop for Graduate Students

This summer, attend a graduate student research workshop on how leading academics use the classical liberal tradition as a paradigm for scholarly research.

The Scholarship & a Free Society seminar will bring together more than 100 graduate students from across disciplines to review contemporary research across a range of topics in history, philosophy, political science, and economics. With insightful lectures, student presentations, and discussion groups, you will strengthen your research skills and broaden your network.

The seminar will take place on the beautiful campus of Bryn Mawr College outside Philadelphia, PA, from June 12 to 18. There is no cost to attend – housing, meals, and workshop materials are provided.

Lectures will address topics central to contemporary academic research across disciplines:

  • How to address social, economic, and environmental challenges through voluntary association and civil society
  • How to combine both normative concerns and empirical study in the humanities and social sciences
  • The nature and origins of modernity

The outstanding faculty will review cutting-edge research such as Nobel Laureate Elinor Ostrom's research on voluntarist solutions and the growing movement in political philosophy towards non-ideal (i.e., real-world based) theories of justice. Each day will include plenary lectures plus concurrent faculty and student presentations, allowing you to personalize the seminar to your interests.

Students accepted into the program can apply to present their own research to groups of up to 30 fellow students and faculty – an exceptional opportunity to receive feedback and improve one's research. Simply attending the research presentations will give you new ideas on how to present your research.

Learn more about the graduate student workshop, Scholarship & a Free Society.

The application deadline is March 31. Apply today.
