Grant Clinic: Obligated to Hire Consultant?=20

Reader Question:=A0

A grant proposal names a particular individual as "consultant" and lists th=
eir credentials to perform consulting work. The grant is awarded. To what=
 extent is the PI obligated to hire that individual? Could another consult=
ant be retained without repercussion? Does the proposal constitute a contr=
act between the institution and the consultant? =20

Expert Comments:=A0
The award of grant funds by a funding agency to a PI is essentially a cont=
ract between the funding agency and the PI to carry out the proposed resea=

 ??Preview of Next Week's Question??

No. 13, January 25-29, 2010

Reader Question:=A0

Several of our technicians have complained to me that small personal items=
 have "begun disappearing" from their lockers and desks since a new aide b=
egan working with us. They're obviously suspicious of her. Since I, as PI,=
 run the lab, they look to me to "solve", or at least investigate, the "pr=
oblem".=A0 But I am not trained for this, and furthermore I don't want to =
 innocently injure the reputation of a new hire. Yet I want to seem sympath=
etic and responsive.=A0 What's my best strategy?

Missed Last Weeks's Question?=20

Reader Question:=20

Often times I see vendors that offer an iPod or other gadget or gift certif=
icate if you purchase a certain amount of product. What are the rules regar=
ding this when you are using federal grant dollars and work in a public Uni=
versity? Are the rules different depending on funding source or your employ=
er?=20
