Workplace Violence: Lessons from the Yale Murder
The tragic murder last year of a Yale graduate student in her laboratory pr=
ovides a clear call to review and revamp security procedures and protocols=
for night and weekend work by Principal Investigators(PI) and Grad Student=
s. Thus this emergency audioconference is being convened to review and bols=
ter the concepts and practicalities necessary for maximum safety for scient=
ists working outside conventional hours.
By their dedicated natures, PIs in all fields of science, and their ambitio=
us and driven graduate students, have never been "clock watchers". Thus, t=
heir pursuit of a hot new idea, or the drive to finalize some important res=
earch, may lead them to be in their laboratories many nights and weekends.
This can be fatiguing. Occasionally it's even "creepy" to be virtually al=
one in the deserted and dimmed laboratory building. But these "off peak" ho=
urs, with few colleagues around, can also present an actual increased risk=
to the personal safety of the researchers. Their zeal for scientific prog=
ress can distract the P.I.s, grad students, and their administrators from t=
he need to maintain a high level of awareness and protection for personal s=
ecurity. And over months, boredom and laxness can creep in, so that theore=
tical security precautions are undermined or skipped entirely.
