Managerial: Avoid Postdoc's Advances?=20

Reader Question: =20

I'm one of the few bachelor PIs left on in our institute. Recently an att=
ractive postdoc strongly hinted she was socially "available" for me. I do =
not wish to pursue the matter. But in case she proves vindictive, or imagi=
nes more exists than really does, should I make a written note, or "whisper=
" to the Dean or anyone else?=20

Expert Comments:=20

Your cautious instincts are correct here. Relationships in the workplace c=
an create legal havoc for managers. To help you avoid any potential issues=
, you should report her actions to the human resources department or to who=
mever is responsible for sexual harassment (SH) complaints.

What -- you may be asking-- does this have to do with SH? Let me provide q=

 Comments by Melissa Fleischer, Esq, a management-side employment law atto=
rney with over twenty years experience and founded HR Learning Center LLC.=20

She is also the principal speaker of next Tuesday's (Feb 23) audioconferenc=
e Workplace Violence: Lessons Learned. This emergency seminar is especially=
 timely after yet another deadly research workplace violence attack occurre=
d at University of Alabama-Huntsville over the weekend. Researcher, Amy Bis=
hop, Ph.D, supposedly disturbed at tenure decisions, allegedly opened fire =
in a department faculty meeting killing three and wounding three others. =20

Like other tragic incidences, Bishop's history showed a warning sign: stron=
g dissatisfaction that her tenure had been denied. Detailed re-examination =
of the suspect's past history revealed her participation in the 1986 shooti=
ng death of her brother had been ruled "accidental". More recently, she had=
 been a suspect in a a 1993 letter bomb case to a Harvard Medical School p=
rofessor.

Many incidents of violence have common warning signs but these can be hard =
to pinpoint. Scientists, especially, can be "normal", though quirky. Join M=
elissa as she walks you through the difficult task of differentiating eccen=
tricity, from simmering anger, and violence proclivity. She will discuss su=
ch limited tools as are available for predicting aberration.

Please beware: There is no simplistic or easy answer, and we do not promise=
 such...but you owe it to yourself and your research colleagues to learn ab=
out when and how a colleague or co-worker "snaps" into violence.

The foregoing has been legal information only and should not be considered =
legal advice on a specific issue. For legal advice, the reader should cont=
act legal counsel of his or her choice.

??Preview of Next Week's Question??

 No. 17, February 22-26, 2010

Reader Question:=20

I have been at my university for 1 1/2 years but I am interested in moving =
to another institution. Is there any impact in the PI career by moving to =
other institution after such a short time period? How do I protect my labor=
atory staff? =20

              =20
                        Missed Last Weeks's Question?

Reader Question:=20

Because of some of our recent scientific papers, we have achieved a bit of =
prominence as "up and comers" in our field. At the institute lunch table, I=
 have freely shared ideas and thoughts with a colleague whose lab is down t=
he hall. But they were just collegial, rambling discussions, nothing more. =
Now, he has published a paper in a major journal and listed me as a co-auth=
or. This is without my permission and without there having been any real in=
put or review from me. I do not want my widespread colleagues to feel I hav=
e endorsed this chap's research -- let alone contributed to it. He claims h=
e was just being gracious by including our name, but we feel he might be "t=
rying to ride on our coattails". At this point, how can I set the record st=
raight, and also prevent him from doing this again?
