5 Common Mistakes That Will Sink Your Grant=20
by Christopher Francklyn, PhD

The challenge that all reviewers face as they try to separate the outstand=
ing from the merely good is to convert their intuitive, emotional response =
to a grant into a series of bullet points that encapsulate the proposal's s=
trengths and weaknesses. Over the years I've been writing my own reviews an=
d listening to other panelists at review meetings, I've come to appreciate =
that grants that score poorly appear to share one or more of a common set o=
f flaws. Avoiding these pitfalls, and appreciating the issues that frequent=
ly diminish reviewer enthusiasm, should help you to write a better grant. H=
ere, I will highlight 5 common mistakes that recur among the grants of both=
first time and experienced PI's. Some are inherent in the science itself, =
while others are more a function of presentation. Obviously, the former req=
uire a greater degree of re-assessment and alteration of the revised grant =
than =0Athe latter. continued on page 14

Lab Romance Requires Careful Attention to Staff Dynamics, Myriad Rules and =
Policies=20

Can right brain activity bunk with left brain output? Is there room in your=
lab for Cupid's arrow? Can, in other words, a principal investigator date =
a grad student who's also his or her lab assistant? Possibly. But a workpla=
ce romance will require both of you to adjust your behavior to keep the dyn=
amics of the lab from being affected by the feelings the two of you have.

That's the word from Gia Honnen-Weisdorn JD LLM MBA, Adjunct Professor of l=
aw at Pepperdine University and a practicing attorney with the Law Offices =
of Gia Honnen-Weisdorn. "The first thing to do is make sure the Human Resou=
rces Department and whoever gives legal advice at your organization is invo=
lved from day one," she says. "You and the grad student should formalize th=
e fact that you're in a consensual romantic relationship. You want to make =
sure everything is on record."

The point, she emphasizes, is preventing the subordinate - your lab assista=
nt - from saying later that he or she didn't have any choice but to =
