Suggested Presentation:  Organ Pipe with removable slide.  3 demos

  1. Open Pipe resonance; Blow into the pipe and hear the fundamental. Blow harder and hear the 2nd Harmonic.
  2. Cover the end of the pipe with your hand and the new fundamental will be one octave down.  An air pipe closed at one end.  Blow harder and you hear the third harmonic.  Closed on one end you will only hear odd harmonics.
  3. Put in the sliding bar and display how the pitch depends on the length of the column.

 

 

A great demo for before or after deriving standing wave conditions for open and closed tubes.
