Title: Factorization algebras and genera

Abstract: The notion of a factorization algebra arose in attempting to axiomatize the structure of the observables of a quantum field theory, but it has deep roots in the Goodwillie-Weiss calculus of manifolds. I will introduce this notion and describe two examples that arise from simple QFTs and that recover the A-hat genus and Witten genus, respectively.
