Participant Qualifications

In general, teachers of undergraduate students in degree-granting institutions of higher education in the United States whose teaching responsibilities are in the natural or social sciences, mathematics, or engineering are eligible for participation. In some interdisciplinary courses, a few teachers from other fields will be admitted when this would enhance the effectiveness of the course.

High school teachers and non-U.S. faculty are admitted when space is available. "Promiting Active Learning in Introductory Physics Courses" is very appropriate for those teaching high school physics, and we have always had a few high school teachers each time we have offered these courses. Such applicants may want to contact David Sokoloff when they submit their applications to the Field Center. He can often make a case to the Field Center for admission of such applicants to the course.

Qualified teachers may apply to any Field Center and may participate in more than one course if space permits. Participants are selected by the Field Center Directors. In general, the criteria used for selection are: satisfaction of the listed prerequisites of the course and the potential benefit of the course to the applicant either directly in his or her own teaching, by the direct influence on the teaching of his or her colleagues, or by involvement in improving the undergraduate science curriculum at the applicant's institution. In interdisciplinary courses, an effort is made to select applicants who represent a wide range of disciplines.

The Chautauqua Program will not discriminate on the basis of age, race, creed, sex, color, or national origin of any applicant or Participant.
